i’m going to tear up seeing that 4/10 for now you see me. really? that bad?

It’s not the worst film I’ve ever seen (which is never a great way to start talking about a movie lol) but I had low expectations and it could barely even hurdle that. The most I can say about this movie is that I was able to sit through it until the end but that’s about it. The characters, the plot, the payoff, etc. are so underwhelming that by the time the movie was over I was just glad to get out of the theater.

Wooooooo! What a day, what a motherfuckin’ day lol (Trainin Day quote btw haha). So I decided to have an all day movie hopping extravaganza, I was planning on seeing five movies but I cut it short to just four: Before Midnight, The Purge, This is the End, and Now You See Me. I was planning on seeing Epic as well but to be honest outside of Before Midnight and This is the End, the other movies I basically just watched to watch lol. Before Midnight was AMAZING, The Purge was bad, This is the End was funny but not as good as I hoped it would be, and Now You See Me was just kind of okay.

I would just like to say that if you haven’t seen Before Sunrise and Before Sunset then DO IT and then see Before Midnight in theaters while you still can. This unlikely trilogy of films might just be the best trilogy ever, of all-time. I know I love to use hyperbole but in this instance I don’t think there are any trilogies where I would give perfect scores to every single movie, but this one is it.

Before Midnight - 10/10

This is my little niece Isabel! She turned 7 on this day and it was so great to see her and be around her on my vacation to Oregon/Washington. If you’ve known me for a while or even followed this blog for a bit, you’d know that I always wanted a little sister when I was a kid but I ended up being the youngest of the two children my Mom and Dad ultimately had.

I remember two years ago my cousin Ate Seca, her husband Darren, and Isabel came down to visit us in SF and she was such a little rambunctious troublemaker! Before she left Darren bought her a Pikachu stuffed animal because she kept playing with our Pikachu at our house. When I visited last year it was under less than ideal circumstances because I was only a week post-op after knee surgery. When Isabel saw me go into their house on crutches with a huge brace on my right leg I just see her kind of look at me blankly then she runs away and comes back with the Pikachu! I was surprised that she remembered me because my Ninong Raymond’s nieces completely forgot who the hell I was after a few years LOL. So yeah this year when I visited she was in the car when my Ate Seca and Auntie Glenda picked us up and she was already holding the Pikachu hahaha. Isabel is soooooo funny! Like I was on my phone sending a few texts and she just says “Pikachu doesn’t like it when you’re on your phone” and then she’d have Pikachu pretend shock me LOL. And if a little girl pretend shocks you with a Pikachu, YOU GO WITH IT! ALL THE WAY! So I basically pretended I’d been electrocuted hahah.

Despite the fact that she’s only 7 years old I was surprised by the maturity of the things she said sometimes. One bit that took me by surprise was how she told me that she had to be tough because the boys tried to make fun of her and she didn’t like it when they did that so she had to stand up for herself. I was just like “Damn! This is a 7 year old!” It’s funny to me when people say that race isn’t a problem anymore or that kids don’t see it because Isabel told me she noticed that she’s the only one who “looks like me”. My friends and I have always talked about how living in the Bay Area we didn’t necessarily get the “typical” high school experience because we come from such a diverse area. I didn’t think about it but Isabel does live in a primarily white neighborhood where being Asian, you really stick out. I just hope that being “different” doesn’t affect her and that she accepts who she is and doesn’t care what anybody else thinks. She’s a really smart kid and has such a good heart, I know she’ll be fine because she’s strong!

I got a little sad towards the end of our trip because I realized that there’d be a day when Isabel was all grown up and she wouldn’t be waiting for me at home or the airport with Pikachu in hand. Then again, you can’t expect things to always stay the same, change is the one constant in life and you have to accept that if you’re to ever really live. It was great to spend time with Isabel because I know she won’t be little forever. It makes me think about what the future might hold for me and maybe having kids of my own one day. Maybe not soon or anything lol, but hopefully one day…

He couldn’t bring himself to stand up to Grindelwald because he didn’t want to jeopardize their friendship. Even as an adult, he didn’t confront Grindelwald until it was nearly too late. As we get older, our dreams become more “realistic” and won’t go as far as you hoped to…unless you get off your ass and work for it. My dream? Happiness. Simple? I think not. I don’t want to wake up one day at age 45 doing the same thing and feeling an empty void in my life. Soon, you will see my dreams turn into a reality because I will not allow myself to lose my drive or ambition. This is my time. This is my time to do it. I’m in my 20’s, and if I’m going to dream..I’m going to dream big, then it’s going to punch reality in the balls.

If you’re going to dream, then dream bold. Don’t let any circumstance discourage you from achieving them. Want to start your own clothing line? Business venture? Sing? Dance? DO IT. One thing we all will never fail is dreaming.

Even though there are 8 movies listed, I still consider this an off week haha. I was on vacation from 6/9-6/14 so I didn’t get to watch as much as I wanted because duh I was on vacation lol.

Red Dawn… Wow… this was a terrible movie. This was one of the worst movies I have seen in recent memory. They don’t play it serious and they don’t get the camp factor right so instead it’s in this inbetweeny area that’s basically shit. There’s only one moment that I thought was kind of ballsy for a film that was basically made to hit all the low bars necessary for an action movie. I did laugh quite a bit at some of the terrible dialogue and moments, but there is no reason what so ever that you should ever watch this movie. If you’ve seen this movie and enjoy it all I have to say is that I hate you and you should feel bad about yourself lmfao.

I saw Hansel and Gretel the night after seeing Red Dawn and was expecting another piece of crap. And I don’t know if it was the rock bottom expectations but I actually thought this movie was sort of enjoyable. I don’t think they completely make use of the R rating, especially with the use of profanity, but there are quite a few gruesome and bloody kills. There is just something inherently watchable about seeing Jeremy Renner use a witch as a boxing bag or Gemma Arterton threaten to “blow the sheriff’s fucking brains out” hahah. I was expecting a lot more terrible CGI for the action but there is a surprising amount of practical effects use here. This is not a good movie by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s not a horrible one either. If you enjoy good campy fun and B movie action, you could do a lot worse than this.

I don’t feel like I can completely give a definitive review of Chinese Zodiac because I was watching it off a bootleg and the quality wasn’t that great. Especially considering this is a martial arts movie where being able to clearly see the action is absolutely necessary. As such, I thought this was a pretty enjoyable movie for the most part. The acting is very Rumble in the Bronx (if you get what I mean) but the action scenes are very inventive and - while I won’t say it feels like classic Jackie Chan - they are almost like classic Jackie Chan. The parts where the movie starts lecturing or doesn’t involve action drags the movie down. If you’re a fan of Jackie Chan I think you should check this movie out to see that even at his age, Jackie’s still got it.

Identity Thief totally puzzled. The first 45-60 minutes this movie is a wacky comedy full of slapstick and one liners in a crazy world that doesn’t resemble the real world what so ever, then the last 50-60 minutes the movie turns into a dramatic piece mixed with a little comedy. Tonally the movie sets up a wacky comedy and by the end they try to get us to care about the characters as people and that mix just doesn’t work. What makes this movie watchable - and saves it in my opinion - is Jason Bateman’s comedic timing. I’m a huge fan of Bateman and he just always has these small lines from time to time that are just flat out hilarious because of his delivery. Identity Thief would probably make an okay rental, but other than that don’t bother.

I rewatched Fast & Furious 6 in theaters at Cinetopia (I’m still writing a post on that whole experience, it’s just taking a while lol). Check out my Fast & Furious 6 review here.

This may come as a shock, but I’m actually not a fan of Despicable Me. I think it’s fine as a kid’s film, but I’ve always seen it as a huge disappointment considering how cool the premise of this film is. It could’ve been a spy vs. spy film with a heart but instead it uses cheap ploys to generate goodwill and elicit a response from the audience. Let’s just make the kids and the minions super cute without giving them anything else to add to their character. We’ll put the kids in a ridiculously over the top orphanage to make you feel sorry for the kids. Despicable Me is a relatively fun movie, but it never reaches or grasps true greatness.

Started this particular week off watching The Godfather Part 2 at Jason and Liz’s place, I decided this was going to be the start of an epic week with epic movies and TV shows haha.

I’ve been greatly enjoying Battlestar Galactica but the fact that they’ve had two plot points where someone happens to drop/something happens to fall and explode as a plot point to be extremely ridiculous. The way they happen is almost comical as well. Besides that this show is totally connecting with the sci-fi geek in me and Admiral Adama is a fucking BOSS!

I’ve only seen The Godfather and The Godfather Part 2 once each, so seeing Part 2 for the second time was pretty great. I don’t own the Godfather trilogy in any format and after seeing Part 2 again I’m itching to pick up that Blu-ray trilogy collection. The Godfather Part 2 is hailed as one of the greatest films of all-time and for good reason and it’s shameful that I don’t own it lol.

The Wire season 4… I consider this to be my favorite season of television ever… period. I can’t even put into words how much I love this show and this particular season because I just love everything about it. The acting, the drama, the writing, the themes, the filmmaking, everything is just so freakin’ amazing. I’ve heard some people criticize The Wire for being didactic, but if it is then it’s only because The Wire has a good point to tell. These are universal truths that even over a decade later are still relevant - and will most likely ALWAYS be relevant - to American society. If you have not seen The Wire and you like TV shows, this has to go on your bucket list because this is by far the greatest show of all-time.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day is my favorite movie of all-time. I did a write up on it a while back but I’m too lazy to try and find it lol. I watched this film at a very early age (don’t ask why a 3 year old was watching Terminator 2, just go with it lol) and I don’t think it will ever be replaced just because of all the memories and nostalgia I have for it. I actually own like 3 copies of this movie (4 if we still have the VHS, not sure if we do haha).

Saving Private Ryan is my number two movie of all-time. This is the first time I’ve seen this movie in full in probably… at least 5 years. Spielberg just has an eye for creating visually arresting, horrifying, and breathtaking images. A soldier drowning under the weight of his equipment, a mother wobbling to the floor. One thing I noticed this time around was the particularly nuanced acting by Giovanni Ribisi as he tells the story about his mother in the church. I always thought it was a good scene, but something about watching it now that I’m older really hit me in a way it never did before. I like the small hints at Captain Miller’s background such as when he knows the Emerson quote that Upham uses. A line that stuck out to me on this rewatch is Captain Miller saying “Every man I kill, the farther away from home I feel”.

Jerry Maguire ranks somewhere in the top 20 for me as far as movies. There is just something about this movie that clicks with my sensibilities. I guess because it appeals to the sports fan in me as well as the hopeless romantic side as well lol. Unforgettable lines like “You had me at hello” aren’t necessarily realistic and I don’t think anyone in the world speaks like that, but something about it is intrinsically works for me.

Every single movie/TV show I’ve listed here is a must see in my opinion. They have profoundly affected me as a person and I’d love it if more people saw these movies/shows.
