So I saw 21 Jump Street last week but forgot to write about it so I guess I’m going to go with a more abbreviated review than usual.
Overall I freakin’ loved it! This is the best Channing Tatum performance since A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints (which was, hard to believe, 6 years ago) and considering the fact that that was a drama and this is a comedy showcases some range. After A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints I always knew he had talent, but I absolutely hated Tatum because he was wasting it on shit movies. This movie puts him back in my good graces because he was flat out hilarious and definitely shines. Jonah Hill actually shows a little range as well because he was more like Michael Cera in Superbad than typical outrageous Jonah Hill. The Tatum/Hill chemistry was some next level bromance shit lol. They were both fantastic in this movie.
What I dug about this movie was how it showed the differences in generations and what’s cool today versus what was cool a decade ago. What was popular a generation ago isn’t the same as what is popular now. It sounds like such a ridiculous thing to praise, but I like the fact that this movie took the time to acknowledge that fact instead of just going with typical dumb sports jocks as the baddies and misunderstood nerds as the heroes.
It’s obviously not as good, but 21 Jump Street is seriously the best parody of a genre I can think of since Hot Fuzz. The way they played off of typical high school stereotypes and tropes was hilarious. If you are a movie lover, you should find a lot to enjoy from this movie. This movie is still going strong at the box office so if you can make it to a theater, definitely check out 21 Jump Street!
8.5/10
I have ONE spoiler that I will get into after the “read more” break. So SPOILERS after the jump!
The one joke I wanted to say was brilliant was very early on in the movie when the police captain of Hill and Tatum talks about how they’re reviving an old 80’s program because they’ve run out of new ideas so they’re just bringing back old shit and hoping no one notices. I literally started DYING in the theater and I was the ONLY ONE laughing. I bet people were like “WTF is this kid laughing about?” but it seems like that meta reference just went WAY over people’s heads even though it was so blatant/obvious. Okay, yeah, just wanted to give that joke some love because that was amazing haha.
